Quiz: Power and Righteousness

Based on the King James Version

Scripture dictates to us that we "be of the same mind one toward another" and that we "mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate," and also that we "be not wise in your own conceits" (Romans 12:16).

  1. Jesus came that we might have ________________ (John 10:10), which is defined as to ___________ "the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (John 17:3). To facilitate this, we must _______________ to show our selves approved unto God (2 Timothy 2:15), and also, we must ____________ "the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of" (John 5:39) Jesus. However, this is not a one-time event but we must ___________________ in the Word, for then are we _______________ of Christ and we shall ___________ the truth and the truth shall _____________ us free (John 8:31-32). In addition, we must have ____________ in God (Mark 11:22), which inherently brings ____________________ unto righteousness (Romans 6:16). Thus, it's through the Word of God that we learn how to be rightly related to God.
  2. Examine 1 John 5:5-8; John 19:34; John 15:3; Psalm 51:1-3; Psalm 119:9; Ephesians 5:26; Revelation 1:5-6; and Ezekiel 36:24-27. Jesus said "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God" (John 3:5). Water represents ______ ________ which is Jesus Christ and by his shed __________ we are washed from our ________. The Spirit represents ______ ________ __________ which God puts into our ______ ____________ to "cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them."
  3. Examine Luke 4:36; Luke 9:1; and Mark 1:27. To cast out devils or to manifest any other "signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost" (Hebrews 2:4), __________________ and __________ must be given to us by God.
  4. John the Baptist said "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire" (Matthew 3:11).
    1. Water baptism is an excellent practice to help a new believer identify with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The new believer is submerged, representing his __________ to a life of sin (repentance), and then surfaced, representing his ________________________ from the "dead" and his emergence as a "new creature."
    2. Spiritual Baptism, also called baptism with the Holy Ghost, is immersion into the body of Christ through his shed blood, which occurs when someone is born again. "For by one" ____________ "are we all" ________________ "into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit" (1 Corinthians 12:13). "For as many of you as have been baptized into" ____________ "have put on Christ" (Galatians 3:27).
    3. Baptism with fire represents the manifestation of the power of God in the believer. Ultimately, baptism with fire represents some one being fully indoctrinated into the Word of God: Jesus Christ. Thus being "filled with the Holy Ghost" (being baptized with fire) is, generally, subsequent to being baptized with the Holy Ghost. Therefore while all born again Christians have been baptized with the Holy Ghost, not all have been baptized with fire—filled with the Holy Ghost: "ye shall receive" __________, "after that the" ________ __________ "is come upon you" (Acts 1:8). "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the" ________ __________ "and with" __________ (Acts 10:38).

Examine Acts 2. It should be noted that several key events occurred in Acts 2: 1) the third person of the trinity, the Holy Ghost, entered the world ("cloven tongues like as of fire"); 2) the disciples received the person of the Holy Ghost into their spirit (baptized with the Holy Ghost); 3) the disciples, full of the Word of God, were filled with the Spirit of the Word and received power (authority was already given in John 20:22-23); and 4) the signs that "shall follow them that believe" (Mark 16:17) were manifested (in this case, speaking in other tongues). The phrase "filled with the Holy Ghost" is equivalent to receiving the fullness of the Holy Ghost plus power, which is also referred to as being baptized with fire. The Holy Ghost represents, among other things, the authority (the right) available to us through Christ and the fire represents the power (the ability) available to us through Christ. Thus being "filled with the Holy Ghost" means having the full authority and power of Jesus Christ available.

  5. When do Christians receive the two items listed in question #3? __________________ is given when the person is baptized with ______ __________ and __________ is given when the person is baptized with ________.
  6. Compare the following scriptures in Genesis (Genesis 17:7; Genesis 17:10-11; Genesis 17:13) to Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 8:10-12; and Hebrews 10:16-17. For both the old and new covenant, God ordained a specific and permanent sign (token) to attest to who is included in the covenant. Under the old covenant, the sign was the circumcised flesh of each male. The problem with that sign was that it did not ensure a two-way agreement. God agreed to be God unto those with the sign; however, those with the sign did not necessarily agree, in their hearts, to be God's people. For instance, male babies eight days old were circumcised into the covenant. Evidence that the sign was only an outward show, is highlighted by the ratio of men that made it into the Promised Land of those that left Egypt: only two of the six hundred thousand men of age that left Egypt made it into the Promised Land. Under the new covenant, the sign of the covenant involves a more explicit agreement between God and us. The sign is no longer a permanent sign of the flesh but a permanent sign of the spirit. After all, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24). The sign is the circumcised heart of the believer: the Word of God written in their __________ and ____________, not in tables of stone: "And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables" (Exodus 32:16).
  7. Examine Joshua 1:8; Romans 12:2; 1 Timothy 4:13; 2 Timothy 2:15; and Colossians 3:16. Notice, study is not for the sake of knowledge, but rather, that we may know how to walk in the Spirit and how to please God. Continual reading and studying of the Word of God puts the Word into my mind and starts the process of getting the Word of God written in my mind. "And be not" __________________ "to this world: but be ye" ______________________ "by the" ________________ "of your" ________, that ye may" __________ "what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect," ________ "of God." However, the ultimate target is the heart. The heart is comprised primarily of the conscience (spirit) intertwined with the mind, emotions and will (soul).
  8. Examine Acts 15:9; Titus 1:15; Hebrews 3:18; and Hebrews 11:6. The process to move the Word from the mind to the heart starts with __________: unwavering belief in the God and his Word. __________ puts the studied Word into the heart. Hence, the warning from the writer of Hebrews: "Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God" (Hebrews 3:12).
  9. Examine Psalm 111:10; Romans 6:16; Romans 5:3-5; Romans 16:26; and James 2:17. While belief (faith) puts the Word into the heart, it is __________________ that starts the writing process. "Seeing ye have purified your souls in" ______________ "the truth through the Spirit" (1 Peter 1:22). However, __________________ to God's Word runs counter to our carnal nature; therefore, like Jesus, it is necessary to ____________ to learn __________________. "Though he were a Son, yet learned he" __________________ "by the things which he" ________________ (Hebrews 5:8). It is in suffering that we learn ________________: "For ye have need of" ________________, "that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise" (Hebrews 10:36). In addition, in suffering we gain more intimate knowledge of God; that is, we increase our ____________________ of him delivering us out of our troubles: "Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction" (Isaiah 48:10). Moreover, in suffering we increase our ________ in the Lord: "For we are saved by ________: but ________ that is seen is not ________: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet ________ for" (Romans 8:24)?
  10. Examine 1 Kings 3:9; Job 32:8; Psalm 119:130; Proverbs 2:6; Proverbs 4:7; Luke 24:45; 1 Corinthians 14:20; and James 1:5. Finally, it takes __________________________, given by the Lord, to complete the writing process both in heart and in the mind. "Give me __________________________, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart" (Psalm 119:34).
  11. He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his __________ ____ __________, trusting in the LORD. His __________ ____ ______________________, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies. (Psalm 112:7-8)
  12. There is all this talk about bearing fruit in the New Testament (Matthew 3:10; Matthew 7:16-20; Matthew 12:33; Matthew 13; Matthew 21; Mark 4; Mark 11:14; Mark 12:2; Luke 3:9; Luke 6:43-44; Luke 8; John 12:24; John 15; Romans 6:22; Romans 7:4-5; 2 Corinthians 9:10; Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 5:9; Philippians 1:11; Colossians 1:10; Hebrews 12:11; James 3:17-18).
    1. "Herein is my Father glorified, that ye" __________ __________ __________ (John 15:8).
    2. When a Christian __________ __________ __________ and their __________ __________ __________ "whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you" (John 15:16).
    3. What is the significance of fruit? ________________________________________

  13. Examine Matthew 7:15-20; Matthew 7:21-23; Luke 10:1; Luke 10:17-20; and Romans 11:29. What happens when a Christian receives the two items listed in question #3; however, they lack fruit?
  14. Examine Matthew 16:24; Romans 6; Romans 7:1-6; Romans 12:1-2; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 4:22; and Colossians 3:9-10. To deny yourself is to ______ to your ______ ways; that is, ______ to your life before ____________. "For he that is" ________ "is freed from sin." There is one God and two covenants; if you are "not in Christ" you are automatically under the Old Covenant. "Not in Christ" are those who are not born again; however, it also includes those that are born again that have not died to the ways of the world, not died to the law, and not died to pride. "Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the ______ hath ________________ over a man as long as he ____________? For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth __________ unto __________. But now we are delivered from the law, that being ________ wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter."
  15. Examine Deuteronomy 28:1; Deuteronomy 28:15; Deuteronomy 30:10; 1 Kings 19:12; Psalm 81:11; Psalm 95:7; Isaiah 50:5; Ezekiel 2:2; Ezekiel 3:10; John 3:29; John 5:25; John 10:3; John 10:16; John 10:27; and John 18:37. You have to remove anything that impedes your ability to hear from God and to actively listen for that still small voice. Of course, continual study of, belief in, and obedience to the Word of God are the base requirements: "So then faith cometh by _______, and _______ by the ________ of God" (Romans 10:17). "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man ________ my __________, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20).
